Within the wilds of Tasmanias west coast lies a stillness. An ancient land that has born witness to change for hundreds of thousands of years.
The Gordon River winds its way from deep in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area to the wide expanses of Macquarie Harbour. It is an area of contrasts the still, silent reflections of the river meet a deep harbour that was once a thriving home to piners, miners, convicts and fishermen.
The stories of the area are captured and retold on a Gordon River Cruise from the fishing port of Strahan to the temperate rainforests on the banks of the river. From the moment you step on board you will be taken on a Tasmanian journey of epic proportions.
A new vessel, Spirit of the Wild, takes visitors on this truly Tasmanian journey, capturing the spirit and wonder of this special place.
Spirit of the Wild is as unique as the surrounding wilderness. Its floor-to-ceiling windows provide wide expanses to take in the views, and comfortable seating in a variety of configurations caters for everyone from groups and families to couples.
But it is when you enter the Gordon River that Spirit of the Wild truly comes into its own. The diesel engines are switched off, and we are propelled only by electric motors, allowing visitors to cruise quietly up the river, past the ancient rainforests, providing an experience unique to the area.
On-board you will hear tales of long ago, woven with interesting characters who helped shape the area to what it is today. These include Captain James Kelly, Lady Jane Franklin, a convict and a grouchy convict guard.
You will tread lightly in the world heritage area to see the towering native trees up-close, as well as stopping to examine the convict ruins of Sarah Island.
The best in local produce and beverages is also provided, showcasing some of the best Tasmania has to offer. Prepared daily by the team of chefs at Strahan Village, the buffet-style lunch on the Main Deck and Premier Upper Deck are a highlight of the cruise.
If youre short on time, in summer an Afternoon Highlights Cruise to see the Gordon River on a shorter tour is also offered, as well as the Bonnet Island Experience, a boutique wildlife tour to a small island to see penguins at dusk. www.gordonrivercruises.com.au.
