Launceston’s eagerly awaited Poutinerie opens on Wednesday, serving poutine, loaded fries, sides and sundaes.
Poutinerie owners Cameron and Sharla Gallagher have been testing Launceston’s taste for poutine via Burger Junkie’s food van and store, but now the Canadian inspired French fry dish has its own dedicated location in the city.
“Poutinerie shops do this model all over Canada,” Ms Gallagher said.
“We wanted a business just around French fries. Who doesn’t love French fries?
“We’ve been wanting to do this for a number of years but needed the right location. And then this one came up.”
The couple transformed the business at 55 George Street, Launceston, which was previously Townsend’s Bakery and, more recently, Toastee, into a French Provincial inspired store seating around 30 people.
“We’re excited to take over the old Townsend’s Bakery. We wanted to keep the integrity of the building,” Ms Gallagher said.
Traditional poutine includes French fries, cheese curd, gravy and herbs, but fried chicken or different toppings can be added.
“People are genuinely pretty excited about it,” Mr Gallagher said.
“We haven’t been able to find another branded [poutinerie] here yet,” he said.
Poutinerie has a focus on “really good quality food and fun options”.
Tasmanian producers have been sourced for the ingredients, with cheese curd coming from Pyengana, potatoes from the North-West and beef from Landfall.
“We make all our own stocks from scratch for the gravy. No shortcuts have been taken,” Mr Gallagher said.
Burger Junkie regulars will recognise artist Josh Foley’s artwork on the Poutinerie wall, with a girl blowing maple leaves throughout the shop.
Poutinerie had its soft opening for friends and family on Monday night, but opens to the public on Wednesday and Thursday between 11am and 4pm and Friday and Saturday between 11am and 8pm.
“The week after we’ll start opening a bit later,” Ms Gallagher said.
