Officers attended New World Avenue at Trevallyn about 6pm after receiving reports of gunshots being fired.
Upon arrival, officers found a 47-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound to the leg.
Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Philippa Burk said police are following a specific line of inquiry in regards to the shooter.
The victim was taken to the Launceston General Hospital by ambulance where she underwent surgery.
She remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Police have received a number of reports of gunshots in the area since Monday and asked for anyone with information about the gunshots or shooting to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
