Police attended New World Avenue at Trevallyn about 6pm after receiving reports of gunshots being fired.
Upon arrival, officers found a 47-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound to the leg.
The woman was taken to the Launceston General Hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery for her wounds.
Tasmania Police Detective Acting Inspector Craig Fox said the bullet hit the victim’s femur, so her leg needed to be repaired and the bullet retrieved.
Police are yet to locate the gun or suspect, but the bullet removed from the victim’s leg will be tested.
Several people were home at the time of the shooting, including a number of minors.
Detective Acting Inspector Fox said the victim and shooter were known to each other and the incident was not a random attack.
“The prevalence of firearm incidents in Tasmania is still very low …. whilst it is concerning, we don’t want the general public to be alarmed,” he said.
Ballistics experts also examined damage on a neighbour’s car to determine if it was caused by a gunshot.
The gun is yet to be located, but detectives remain at the scene.
Acting Inspector Fox said police had received a number of reports of gunshots in the area since Monday.
Anyone with information should call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
