The 17-year-old all-rounder, who plays for University in the Women's Premier League, was chosen by head coach Salliann Briggs following trials at the NTCA.
“It's really important that we make sure we are giving as many people who we think are talented within this state a chance to experience this environment,” Briggs said.
“What stood out for us about Sophie was that she's very talented with both bat and ball.”
The program aims to give talented young players their first taste of what's involved with being a member of the Hurricanes squad.
“We think that she's got the potential to get a contract,” Parkin added.
After collecting 20 wickets at 6.05 to tie for the player of the year award, Parkin was a member of the Hurricanes women's development squad which played two matches against Sydney Thunder in Latrobe last week.
She took to the field alongside 2017-18 Northern rookie and former Blues clubmate Emma Manix-Geeves, who now holds a full contract.
“I'm really honoured to get this opportunity to be around the girls and to learn from them,” she said.
“I've been training really hard and working on improving my game.”
Parkin will join the squad until the home game against Perth Scorchers on December 18 before back-to-back matches against Brisbane Heat at Launceston's UTAS Stadium.
