Plans for 62-room luxury development My Cradle were announced by developers Simon McDermott and S.Group on Monday.
The site is located at 4004 Cradle Mountain Road, sitting between Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge and Devils @ Cradle.
The development would sit on the doorstep of the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park, with access only a short distance away.
“This is actually privately-owned, freehold land just outside the National Park,” Mr McDermott said. “It’s a beautiful piece of land, but it’s definitely not inside the World Heritage Area.”
Mr McDermott said the land was bought by his family about 12 years ago to house staff from their other business, McDermott Coaches.
“I got S.Group involved because I wanted to develop the land into something that was of value to it.”
S.Group director Sam Haberle said the architecture for the development aimed to celebrate the land.
“This is a beautiful site. It’s the only site in Cradle Mountain with accommodation where you can actually see the mountain,” he said.
“The architecture is all about bringing that essence of place.”
The development would also include private walking tracks and a stargazing platform.
“We started off looking at a six-room establishment, and as Sam and the guys got involved it’s now gone out to about a 62-room complex,” Mr McDermott said.
“This is something we’ve been working on for around three years. It’s been a long process.
“The development is now in with the Kentish Council.”
Mr McDermott said he hoped the development would be up-and-running by 2020, with building costs about $20 million.
S.Group director Tara Howell said the developers were very proud of the brand and marketing of the project.
“What’s so exciting is that the brand itself is flowing through the architecture,” she said. “It’s this beautiful image that represents Tasmania itself, and the architecture will also speak to Tasmania.
“The visitors that come to Our Cradle will be feeling like they are a part of Tasmania, looking out onto a Tasmanian icon.”
