Cr Chipman was elected at the general meeting held on November 29 and replaces David Downie, former mayor of the Northern Midlands Council.
Mr Downie did not recontest his position in the October local government elections.
Cr Chipman thanked Mr Downie for his contribution and guidance across the past three years, and recognised his input in negotiating a successful outcome with the state government during the ownership debate.
“The recent elections around the state have seen a significant alteration in the makeup of councils with the election of 14 new mayors and around forty percent of councillors being newly elected,” Cr Chipman said.
“Councils face a balancing act between representing the priorities of their communities and their duty as a shareholder in TasWater and the service it provides.”
Previous deputy chief owner’s representative Tony Bisdee stepped down from the role as he was not re-elected as mayor to the Southern Midlands Council. He remained a councillor.
George Town Council mayor Bridget Archer will instead take up the deputy role.
