Liberal party state president Geoff Page made the announcement on Friday and acknowledged her previous efforts in speaking for regional Tasmanians.

“With backgrounds in farming, business and hospitality, Bridget has the skills and real-world experience to deliver for Northern Tasmania,” he said.

Ms Archer has spent nine years in local government and said she was grateful in being able to represent her local community.

"I'm very humbled by the opportunity that's been provided to me by the (party) membership," she said.

"The future of Tasmania is really important to me."

Bass is known to swing between the two major parties and only state parliamentarian Michelle O’Byrne has been able to get a second term in federal politics in the past 20 years.

There was a 10.8 per cent swing towards the Liberals in 2013 which saw Andrew Nikolic elected but in 2016 there was a 10.4 per cent swing against him which saw sitting MP, Labor’s Ross Hart, elected.

"I'm not underestimating the challenge that lies ahead," Ms Archer said.

"I'm really looking forward to getting out into the community and listening to what is important to the people of Bass."

She said she would not stand down from her mayoral position to campaign.

"I think it is entirely possible to continue to fulfil my commitment to the people of George Town and engage more widely with the region," she said.

Ms Archer won 1803 first-preference votes for Liberals in the March state election.
