The calls for cashless parking metres came after the council approved a motion to look into free parking in the city’s multi-storey carpark.
The council’s general manager Michael Stretton said there were already a number of parking and payment options in the city.
“The City of Launceston already has credit card payment options for all its off-street car parks, as well as on the new meters installed near the Penny Royal,” he said.
But, a number of parking and payment options are currently being considered for the city.
“The council is also developing a new parking strategy for the city, as well as preparing a report for aldermen on a 60 or 90-minute free parking option in the council's multi-storey car parks,” Mr Stretton said.
“The council already offers two hours free parking daily in the Paterson East, West and Elizabeth Street car parks between 3.30 and 5.30pm.”
Mr Stretton also reminded people about the free Tiger Bus.
“The free Tiger Bus service operates out of Inveresk seven days a week in the weeks before Christmas, as of 8 December. For $3 a day, commuters and shoppers can park and catch the free Tiger Bus into the centre of the CBD,” he said.
“And with fewer students using the Bathurst Street car park, shoppers can enjoy all-day parking for $4 and for shorter periods at $1 an hour.”
More information about the app will be released soon.
