Jerokee is 17 and loves to interact with other people and has lots to say.
However, often people have difficulty understanding his spoken message.
Jerokee had obtained an iPad with a speech generating app Proloquo2Go, and when Life Without Barriers started supporting Jerokee through the NDIS, he began to get support to learn how to use them.
Jerokee and his mother Jennie regularly see the Life Without Barriers speech pathologist, Katie, and mentor, Addison, who have been supporting them to use the app.
Jerokee has progressed from being able to express one word at a time to combine words so that he can ask questions, share information about his experiences and talk about his feelings.
Asking for a tissue and expressing his feelings was a huge achievement, and the next goals for Jerokee is to use the app in the community and most importantly to keep having fun using his iPad to talk!
Jennie is excited about the opportunities that this app and working with Life Without Barriers has opened to Jerokee.
“It’s been excellent. There has been lots of improvement and it helps the both us of us,” Jennie said.
“I am proud because sometimes he will chat to me using the iPad and has become more vocal too.
“He has learnt to be more independent and “speak properly”.
