And to don that favourite red and white Launceston Tornadoes singlet.

The 15-year-old is one of several hopefuls warming up to chance it with her heroes.

She remembers it vividly walking through the doors of Elphin Sports Centre.

“It was only a few years ago getting my little membership, rocking up to games,” Simpson said. “You always hoped it would happen, so if it all happens, it’ll be cool.”

The shooting guard’s seen them all at close proximity.

Lauren Mansfield, Ally Wilson, Lauren Nicholson and for a moment imagined being on the same court.

The multi-time Tasmanian junior talent said the opportunity is well worth the effort.

“For all they’ve achieved, they’ve well and truly earned their spot,” Simpson said.

“So to learn from them, see what it took to get where they are, how they play and what they do to prepare would be pretty handy to learn off.”

At least 10 players have expressed an interest in signing up with the Tornadoes, but the club is hoping to double that figure ahead of tryouts.

Simpson could well be one of the hungriest.

“I suppose competing at a higher level like against bigger bodies, all that sort of stuff and just the experience with that is what I’m looking forward to,” she said.

The first of three Tornadoes tryouts are set down on December 16 in Deloraine under the watch of assistant coach Lisa Patterson.

Head coach Derrick Washington returns to Launceston for the final-chance selection in February next year.

The club will videotape the sessions for American-based Washington to analyse performances under scrutiny. 

Sophie Ackerly is another trying out, looking to return for a third year at the Torns.

But the 17-year-old bench player acknowledges she is not gifted an automatic spot on a competitive roster.

Ackerly is striving to better her game over the summer.

“It puts you in the mindset early and also makes you feel like you’ve earned your spot in the team,” she said.

Set to enter her final year of school, the St Patrick’s College pupil admits striking the balance between studies and basketball can be tough around the weekends.

But she has warned others attending the tryouts not to hesitate at the opportunity.

“Just competing with the older girls, going all out and not let anything stop you is the way,” Ackerly said.
