Damaged or lost books will now be valued based on shelf-life and it’s individual value.
Rather than incur late fees or referral to debt collection, those who fail to return books may be subject to penalties to lending privileges.
These changes are being done to attract new members as well as library regulars, as well as encourage those who have outstanding books to return them.
The new fee structure will be implemented from December 2018.
The government also hopes to inject $3 million into library contemporary resources such as updating digital resources and books.
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the “government has a strong focus on lifting education outcomes and by making libraries more accessible.”
“We believe these changes to the library to the library borrowing process will help achieve that goal.”
