The Launceston teenager is now sharing her story to help inspire other girls to follow their dreams – whatever they may be.
Miss DeRuyter-Barnett, 19, will be the guest speaker at TasTAFE’s apprentice information night, to be held as part of TasTAFE Info Week.
TasTAFE Info Week aims to provide anyone with an interest in apprenticeships with more information about why they are a good career option and how they work.
As part of the night a panel that will include apprentices and employers will share their own insights.
“I really want to share the message that girls can do anything they want to, it could be an apprenticeship or it might be something different,” Miss DeRuyter-Barnett said.
“It doesn't matter what you want to do as long as you have a passion for it.”
Miss DeRuyter-Barnett started her apprenticeship with Lister Electrics last year and said she was initially drawn to electronics because of the unknown.
“I’ve always been very hands-on but I didn’t know much about electronics so I wanted to learn more,” she said.
She started her studies in vocational education at Newstead College but was picked up as an apprentice by Lister Electrics after completing some work experience.
As part of her studies she completes two-week blocks four times a year at TasTAFE.
She said she enjoys studying at TasTAFE because the teachers bring all her practical knowledge and explain the theory behind it.
“I’m also always learning new skills,” she said.
Miss DeRuyter-Barnett said she enjoyed working in electro-technology because of the wide and varied work she got to complete each day.
She said she would like to see more women following the profession, if they were interested in it and wanted them to know there were more options than just construction.
The TasTAFE apprentice information evening will be held at the Alanvale campus on November 28.
