The group of young authors – from Riverside, West Launceston and Trevallyn primary schools – saw several months of writing effort come to fruition when they attended the launch of The Write Road anthology.
Brainchild of author, playwright, poet and Riverside High School teacher Cameron Hindrum, The Write Road creative writing program had two aims: develop young writers and help with their transition to high school.
“It’s an extension program ... to allow them to develop their skills, to be given the opportunity to practice their skills in writing in different formats,” Mr Hindrum said.
“It’s a chance for kids who love writing to really immerse themselves in what it means to be a writer and to develop work.”
The three primary schools are feeder schools for Riverside High School, and the program aims to introduce them to the school and some of the students they will meet in the halls.
“It gives them a really good chance to meet some of the students from here, who go on to mentor them in their writing for The Write Road and get a look around the school,” he said.
“We offer creative writing as a subject from grade 8, so they can opt into it at that point and many of them can do it as part of their humanities in grade 7.”
