Network engineering executive Channa Seneviratne made the milestone announcement at the TasICT Industry Breakfast in Hobart on Thursday.
“This is an exciting first step for our 5G rollout in Tasmania, with Launceston now among the first cities in Australia to have sites upgraded with 5G technology,” Mr Seneviratne said.
Telstra has upgraded the Invermay and Norwood sites, with the new additions bringing the telecommunication provider’s national 5G-enabled base station total to about 60.
“This investment is part of our planning to bring 5G services to as many of our customers as possible once 5G compatible devices are commercially available next year,” Mr Seneviratne said.
Telstra is expected to deploy 200 5G-enabled mobile base stations across Australia by the end of 2018.
The technology is set to transform the mobile landscape by delivering ultra-low latency and high-data speeds.
The switch to 5G technology was announced by Telstra in August.
