The award comes as the 17-year-old settles into Hobart’s premier league competition with University after four seasons with the Blues.
Parkin’s University side is skippered by newly-announced Hurricanes captain Sasha Moloney and has won three of its four games to date, with the Evandale teenager picking up 2-15 in a big win over Lindisfarne.
“I’ve played against Corinne Hall, Emma Thompson, Erin Fazackerley, Courtney Webb - the likes of those girls and it’s really good to bowl against them because you learn a lot, especially when they’re scoring against you,” Parkin said.
“And having Katelyn Fryett and Sasha Moloney on my team I can get their opinions as well.”
The Lord’s Taverners award, which recognises male and female players aged 16 to 17 who display outstanding skill, attitude and leadership on and off the field, comes as welcome encouragement for Parkin as she pursues higher honours.
“It was really good to get that, I feel very honoured to have received it.
“Most of the girls who previously won the award have gone on to play for Tassie so I’d like to do that as well.”
The scholarship involves a $1000 grant, which will help with Parkin’s weekly travel, and a new bat, pads and gloves.
Her next goal is to win a third-straight state selection for the under-18 national championships in January.
