A code yellow has been declared at the Royal Hobart Hospital, after an unpleasant odour was identified in a section of the emergency department.

The hospital’s executive director of services Susan Gannon said the smell was detected about 11.30am.
“The source is believed to be a blocked grease trap and contractors have been called in to rectify the issue as quickly as possible,” she said.
“While there is no risk to patients or staff, patients have been decanted to other areas of the hospital, and staff are being deployed to support their care.

“A code yellow, signifying an internal emergency, has been declared to assist in the management of the situation.”
Ms Gannon said patients with non-critical care needs should seek assistance from their local GP or other health care providers.
Patients with critical needs will still be triaged and treated as appropriate.
The hospital is currently operating at level four of its patient management protocol.
