But it took a two-time Olympian and 10,000-metre Australian record-holder in a new course record to stop the Launceston schoolteacher.
Ben St Lawrence raced to the top of Mt Wellington in 1:21:50 to break the old mark of Harry Summers in 2013 by two minutes and 19 seconds.
Nick Earl was next across the line, just nine seconds off the old mark in 1:24:18.
Evans finished the 21.1km race in 1:25:42 to capture fourth. The time was better than three of his wins, the other unofficial time in 2016 came after weather sent runners on an alternate course.
Meriem Daoui won the women’s event for a second straight year. She crossed the finish in 1:38:53 – one second slower than in 2017.
But the Hobart 19-year-old was unable to break the course record of 1:37:53 set by Launceston’s Kate Pedley.
Three-time winner Pedley was two minutes and 55 seconds behind in second place.
