Surgeons swapped their scrubs for cricket whites on Sunday, for the Launceston General Hospital equivalent of the Ashes.

The friendly cricket match was held at Invermay’s Faulkner Park, in honour of former LGH director of anaesthesia Dr George Merridew and professor Berni Einoder AM, the hospital’s former chief executive and director of surgery.
With teams comprising of anaesthetists, ICU and surgery staff battling it out for the Merridew-Einoder trophy, organiser Dr Gregg Best said the game was the perfect excuse to build workplace comradery, outside of the hospital.

“I am a cricket tragic, so when we set the formal challenge to the surgeons we were very happy when they came on board,” he said.
“It’s just a great opportunity to get together and enjoy a day of cricket.”
Dr Lokesh Varadiah Anand said the match would become an annual event, extended to all LGH faculties.
“I am from India originally, so cricket is in my blood. Everyone in the hospital has really stepped up to the challenge, which has been great to see,” he said.
