That message is from Detective Acting Sergeant Jason Savage, who has been working with the Launceston Motor Vehicle Taskforce to crack down on break-ins.
“Car break-ins are a statewide problem but have only more recently become an issue in the North of the state,” he said.
“We treat vehicle crime very seriously and, as such, have a team of detectives permanently dedicated to investigating and charging criminals committing vehicle-related crime.”

Four police officers are involved in the taskforce and they strongly recommend locking vehicles at all times, even when parked in a driveway.
“It can be frustrating to hear that many car owners are leaving their vehicle, and sometimes multiple vehicles unlocked and wallets, phones and laptops and other valuables on display,” Detective Acting Sergeant Savage said.
Valuable items should put in a safe and secured area, but police recommend such items are removed from the car.
“We’re asking for assistance from the community to reverse this trend by removing all items of value and securing vehicles at all times,” Detective Acting Sergeant Savage said.
