On Saturday, part one of the Ravenswood Adventure Park will be officially opened, which features a brand new skate park.
Through community consultation, the community asked the City of Launceston Council for a new skate park and family friendly area.
Along with the $300,000 skate park, a new basketball court is being built. In the second stage a playground, cycle path, stage and a barbecue area would be constructed.
Mayor Albert van Zetten said it was “extremely important” for the Northern suburbs to have a place to enjoy.
“The community have been quite excited and involved and wanted to get on board,” he said.
“They’re really looking forward to being able to use it and seeing the skills of our young people.”
The park has a bowl, quarter pipes and grinding bars.
Alderman van Zetten said the park needed an upgrade because of its “aging infrastructure”.
“Skateboarding continues to be a popular activity in Launceston and we want to cater for that,” he said.
“The Ravenswood facility was clearly a good candidate for upgrade and we think we have delivered a fantastic new park for skateboard, scooter and BMX enthusiasts to enjoy.”
At Saturday’s open day, there will be entertainment and barbecues.
Saturday's free opening event will include a Skate Park League competition ran by YMCA Action Sports with three separate heats - Scooter 10am, BMX 11.30am and skate 12.30pm.
There will also be House of Bounce jumping castle, Fancy Faces face painting, City Mission BBQ and court games by YMCA Launceston.
The park was partly funded by a $45,000 Tasmanian Community Fund. The rest of the project was council funded in its 2017-18 capital works program.
“The Tas Community Fund has been great for our community,” Alderman van Zetten said.
The open day starts at 10am until 3pm.
