So instead of asking for presents for herself, Sophie asked her friends to donate treats for animals at the Launceston RSPCA Animal Care Centre.
On Saturday Sophie made the delivery of goods to the Mowbray centre and her mother, Theresa Anthony, said she couldn’t be prouder.
“In the lead up to her birthday, we spoke about the idea of her gifts and what she would like to do to help others,” she said.
“She loves animals and her first idea was the place she calls 'the lost dogs home’.
“The response from her class was just overwhelming.
“When we left the RSPCA on Saturday she was already saying she wanted to do the same thing again next year.”
Centre manager Lorraine Hamilton said it was an incredible act of generosity.
“It is just huge. Kids often get so many gifts and toys these days, so I think it is just a really remarkable message for her parents to be sending, to encourage this sort of selflessness,” she said.
"And it wasn’t just her – all of her friends made a contribution, so it’s so positive.”
