Tasmania Police responded to a call for assistance from an address on Westbury Road at 3.45am on Saturday.
Upon arrival, police cordoned off the road between Bradford Avenue and Mace Street, before making contact with the male occupant of the house involved.
A female occupant was initially in the house, but left about 5am.
Negotiations ran through the day, with the Tasmania Police Special Operations Group, Tasmania Fire Service, Ambulance Tasmania and SES units all in attendance.
About 3.30pm, Tasmania Police confirmed it had taken a man into custody and he was assisting them with their inquiries.
Inspector Ruth Orr described the situation as “very dynamic”.
“The man involved has made threats to harm himself and police,” she said.
“As a result of that, we’ve ended up in a situation where we have contained the residence and negotiated with the male occupant.
“Throughout Saturday, we’ve had a number of resources at the address and we’ve managed to negotiate a peaceful resolution.”
More than eight Tasmania Police units attended the scene, as well as other emergency services.
Inspector Orr said while the resources used for the incident were considerable, the police had to do what was needed to resolve the situation peacefully.
“The person involved did not cooperate with police in the early part of the incident,” she said.
“So it was our role to successfully and safely take him into custody.
“What it takes to do that depends on the circumstances involved.
“It is a drain on public and police resources, but we will utilise what we have have available to ensure it is peacefully resolved.”
Inspector Orr confirmed the man taken into custody was known to police.
“There may have been a situation that was similar,” she said.
“He’s certainly known to us as someone we have dealt with before.”
As of Saturday evening, no charges had been laid. The investigation is ongoing.
