At 6am on November 11, 1918, the Armistice of Compiegne was signed between the Allies and Germany, marking the end of WWI.

More than 2000 Allied pipers were killed during the war, with many more injured during the four-year conflict.

St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band drum major and Pipe Bands Tasmania vice-chairman Peter Scales said four Launceston pipe bands would play The Battle’s O’er at the Old Railway Site at Inveresk at a Remembrance Day service on Sunday.

The bands represented would be the St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band, the City of Launceston RSL Pipe Band, Northern members of the Tasmania Police Pipe Band, and the Scotch Oakburn College Pipes and Drum band.

Mr Scales said it was an honour to be involved in such an important occasion.

“I’ll be in pieces,” he said.

“Anzac Day and other commemorative events in our community each year are important times to reflect on the service of earlier generations and each year, as part of Pipe Bands Tasmania we are honoured to be part of local services and marches.

“The Battle’s O’er commemoration will involve hundreds of pipers across Australia in a final act of remembrance for the Centenary of Anzac.

“The bagpipe tune Battle’s O’er is a part of the Anzac story – a tune always in the piper’s repertoire that allows us as musicians to continue sharing the stories of Anzac, [and show] honour and gratitude to those who have served over the last century.”

The massed band concert will begin at 3.45pm at the Inveresk Railway Station site.

The Launceston Tram Museum will park two trams at the station, one of which was a tram used during the WWI period.

The Australian participation in the international commemoration was organised by Pipe Bands Australia.

The Launceston performance of The Battle’s O’er will take place at 5pm EST, with the aim to coincide with pipers in the United Kingdom and Europe who will play the tune at 6am in the Northern Hemisphere – the time that the signing of the Armistice took place in France in 1918.
