Having wiped a massive 10 seconds off the grade 5 girls’ 800m benchmark with a time of 2.29, Scotch Oakburn 11-year-old Sophie Marshall was understandably pleased.
“It was really exciting and I’m really happy to be the new record holder,” Sophie said.
“My parents were there for the 800 and two of my grandparents were there. They said ‘great job, that was amazing’ and my coach was here as well, it was really good.”

Scotch physical education teacher Nicky Reid was as impressed as any by the feat.
“She won by a fair stretch,” Reid said.
“She went away in a recent cross country team and she won out at the all-schools at Symmons Plains so she is an excellent runner and all-rounder.
“She’s an amazing girl, she’s very dedicated and a good sportsperson and always has a smile on her face.”
