The multiple national champion has dominated elite women’s enduro events in Australia this year and will be looking for a home-ground advantage when the trails of Derby return to the international spotlight.
The Blue Derby network has landed a global first by being asked to stage the inaugural round of the Asia-Pacific Continental Enduro Series on Sunday.
Forming the second leg of the enduro tour, the series runs across three races in Australia and concludes in New Zealand on February 16.
It offers riders the chance to gain world ranking points into the 2019 Enduro World Series which returns to Derby on March 30-31.
Fingers crossed I keep up my recent winning streak
- Launceston mountain biker Rowena Fry
Fry, who turns 36 next month, took out the first round of the enduro tour on the Gold Coast and also claimed victory in the national round last weekend in Adelaide.
“I am motivated as ever to gain some EWS qualifying points and fingers crossed keep up my recent winning streak,” she said.
“It's been a good start to the enduro season for me with Gold Coast and national champs in Fox Creek.
“The social aspect of the sport alone has toned down the seriousness and creates a really fun weekend on and off the bike. This weekend will be fun racing on and showcasing my local Derby trails. It will be a great rehearsal for the EWS round next year.
“I have come into the 2018 enduro season with some success. Mixing up my mountain bike disciplines between cross-country to enduro has allowed me to enjoy racing again by bringing the 'fun' back into my training.”
The top three riders in each category, per event, will automatically progress to the EWS which has attracted a top quality field of elite riders including Australia's reigning world champion Sam Hill.
Victoria’s former professional downhill racer, who was crowned the EWS champion for a second time in Italy earlier this year, will line up alongside last year’s opening round winner Wyn Masters, of New Zealand.
The elite men’s race has attracted more than 100 entries including Tasmanians Dylan Calow, of Perth, Hobart’s Kaine Cannan and Prospect’s former junior world track champion James Robinson.
The event will see around 300 competitors and is free to spectators. Entries are still open for all levels of racing across the weekend, including the challenge category – a shortened more relaxed version of the main categories.
