The company is putting on the stageshow of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island, with a key twist. The character of the parrot will be played by actress Marie Walter, bringing a female presence into the traditionally all-male cast.
Director Stephen Beckett said the story was essentially a coming-of-age morality tale, set in the fantastical world of the high seas.
“There’s a notion of real adventure and danger,” he said.
“The pirates are a ruthless bunch, and when you put them together with decent civilised people, who are also in the play, it’s a clash of cultures.”
IN OTHER NEWS:
Historically accurate costumes have been put together by Anna Zimmerman, who has previously created sartorial magic for rockstar Alice Cooper.
Everything down to the buttons and the pant widths have been designed to reflect what would have been worn by real pirates in the mid-18th century.
“I did research first which was really fascinating, I love everything about pirates,” Ms Zimmerman said.
“The history is really interesting, and I’m just helping the guys look really cool.”
Mr Beckett said the play was aimed at families, and that children (and adults) were encouraged to dress up for the performance.
There will be comedy, audience interaction, giveaways, and live music from Hamish Pike.
Treasure Island will be running at the Earl Arts Centre from November 1 – 3 at 7pm, and November 3 – 4 at 2pm.
