The woman was arrested by Tasmania Police on Monday after the incident and is assisting detectives.
Police allege the woman was in Agnes Street near the school, at George Town, in a highly agitated state and behaving in a disorderly manner. The school enacted their emergency response procedures.
A number of police units quickly responded to the incident and the woman was apprehended a short time later at a nearby residence.
The woman has been detained to appear in an out-of-hours session at the Launceston Magistrates Court.
A letter from Port Dalrymple principal Jeanna Bolton to the school community was posted to Facebook on Monday, following the incident.
“At no time was your child at risk and all the safety protocols were followed and appropriate action taken, including police attendance,” the letter read.
“I would like to reassure you that all students and staff are safe and we were able to manage the situation quickly to ensure students were protected and did not have to witness the incident.”
An Education Department spokeswoman said the department took all incidents of this nature “extremely seriously.”
“Schools are a part of the wider community and society and as such, incidents can sometimes occur, in the proximity of school grounds, that are outside the locus of the school’s control,” the spokeswoman said.
The Education Department has detailed protocol in place relating to school security, including student and staff safety to provide “clear guidelines to help schools respond accordingly to events.”
“Tasmania Police has confirmed they are investigating the matter and the department will continue to provide support to all persons involved.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au
