The girls are participating in a mentorship program run through the University of Tasmania, along with students from Port Dalrymple and Lilydale.
On Wednesday October 24, they visited Jansz winery, where they listened in on a question-and-answer session with successful female businesswomen in the wine industry: Jansz cellar door manager Maxine Harris, Delamere Vineyards co-owner Fran Austin, and Sinapius Wines co-owner Linda Morice, along with artist Anna Van Stralen and University of Tasmania professor Melanie Bryant.

The session encouraged the students to have a flexible approach to their futures, according to Jansz cellar door manager Maxine Harris.
“We spoke about the benefits to us of mentoring, people who mentored us through our working life; embracing that and knowing that its going to be your best learning tool,” she said.
“We also spoke about the importance of education, and how it can take you into different pathways that you’ve never even thought of.
“All of us agreed, you have to make mistakes in order to move ahead and learn. You always think you have to be perfect in everything you do, but actually you learn the most when you fall and pick yourself back up again.”
The students are also working with Jansz artist-in-residence Anna Van Stralen on artworks which will be exhibited at the University of Tasmania Academy Gallery, Inveresk, from December 7 – 19.
They will have three sessions with Ms Van Stralen as well as working on their pieces independently.
Ms Van Stralen said that all the women involved in the program hoped the sessions would inspire the girls about their futures.
“It’s an encouraging space that lets them know there’s a whole bunch of unique pathways, that might not be in the careers book, that are open to them.
“Getting them to consider possibilities is, I think, the main aim of all of us.”
