Baker clinched the London Six-Day Race on Sunday just a week after claiming two medals at the world cup in Paris fresh from winning three golds at the Oceania track championships.

The 24-year-old, of Perth, had disappointing campaigns at her maiden Olympic and Commonwealth Games and Gilmore said her response was typically Tasmanian.

“When Amy missed out on the team pursuit at her first Olympic Games in 2012 she really knuckled down, and that’s what I’m seeing in Georgia as well,” he said.

“The real positive is how she has bounced back. She does not want to be left out of teams and that requires consistent effort.

“She is also a bit more mature and can handle the workload better.”

The Tasmanian riders were both involved in Australia’s crash-marred 2016 Olympic campaign in Rio de Janeiro before earning selection to this year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast where Cure claimed two gold medals but Baker missed out on the team pursuit and finished 21^st in the points race.

At the scene of Cure’s London Olympic disappointment, Baker completed her European tour in style, winning the madison with Ash Ankudinoff, of NSW, and coming sixth in the scratch race.

Topping the general classification on 232 points – 38 clear of Ankudinoff – Baker claimed the champion of champions crown having won five of the eight events (two madisons, the scratch race, elimination and team eliminator).

With the madison, omnium and team pursuit all on the women’s track cycling program for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Gilmore said Baker is presenting a powerful case for national selection.

“It’s really encouraging to see her results in diverse events which puts another feather in her cap that she is not just team pursuit orientated.”

Ankudinoff and Queenslander Kristina Clonan completed an all-Australian podium at London’s Lee Valley Velopark while Cure, of West Pine, competing under her married name Pauwels, finished sixth. 

“This event carries qualification points for world cups which is really positive,” Gilmore added. 

“Georgia and Ash were in terrific form before Oceanias and Georgia has really stepped up since then. This would be one of her biggest individual wins on the world stage so there are real positive signs for her.

“It’s also great to see Amy back racing after her recent marriage and honeymoon. Her place does not go unrecognised and of course she has proven pedigree on the track.

“Macey Stewart also had a really encouraging crack at the world cup. I’m really impressed by her quick turnaround after the end of the road season to achieve what she has. 

“She still has a lot of work to do but her performances demonstrate she can step up when required.”
