The 1998-99 NTCA season saw the Eagles collect first grade, second grade, third grade and under-15 flags, with a last-ball thriller against South Launceston in the first grade final sealing a clean sweep of the competition.
Past players, supporters and volunteers will celebrate the historic achievement from 6pm at Invermay Park after the Eagles’ first home game of the season against Launceston.
“In the history of the competition at that point no club had ever won every level of the comp,” then-coach Wayne Couch said.
“It was the first time that's happened in the history of the NTCA, which is one of the oldest competitions in Australia, so it was a pretty big achievement.
“The day of the A-grade grand final we had the whole club there – the seconds had won, the thirds had already won ... it was a really good feeling and a really good result for the club.”
The clean sweep came on the back of what 1998-99 captain Shane O’Byrne termed a “changing of the guard”, with the departure of a raft of experienced heads making way for fresh blood in Couch, Andy Gower and Damien Jillett.
“We’d had a bit of a lean trot through the A-grade and lost a few finals but we’d always had some good success through the second and third grades year in year out,” O’Byrne said.
“(In 1997-98) we had a real change of the guard basically - we’d had a lot of senior players who left.
“I took on the captaincy pretty young and we grew to that period where we had really good depth through the club and it was a good place to be.”
