Dr McGee recently spoke about the steps she took to entrepreneurship at Business & Employment’s Annual Grand Event for female entrepreneurs in Launceston.
Marrying yogic teaching with business nous, Dr McGee discussed the importance of following the thing you are passionate about.
She calls this dharma, or “knowing what our purpose or passion is”, and explores the concept in her book The Good Hustle.
“It’s when you have that feeling inside that you are completely in flow, that you are meant to be where you are and you are doing what you are meant to do,” Dr McGee said.

This lesson came about from the realisation she was not where she needed to be – or doing what she wanted to do.
Despite her ambition to be a writer from a young age, Dr McGee followed a windy path through study (“I have one of the world’s most impressive HECS debts”) and careers spanning being a chef, adult film reviewer, lobbyist, corporate communicator and more.
“I liken it to being at Myer on Boxing Day – I was in the sales bins rummaging through crazily and just throwing things out to see what’s going to fit me...
“I would go from job to job and then the veil would lift and then I’d suddenly realise I was back in that same place inside where I wasn’t that person, and I have to start all over again,” she said.
Business and Employment supports start-ups and small businesses with advice and mentoring, manager Kim Beveridge said.
“We provide career path planning for Tasmanian jobseekers, making sure they find the right apprenticeship or traineeship,” she said.
The organisation established the Women Entrepreneur Network community, via its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/businessandemployment/.
