The alert was issued about 4.40pm on Monday.
The fire is burning north of Medeas Cove Road at St Helens, and people in the area are warned there may be smoke and ash visible.
Four Tasmanian Fire Service vehicles are at the scene, and one Parks and Wildlife tanker.
Tasmania Fire Service say there is no immediate threat, but fire under these conditions can be difficult to control.
“People in St Helens should keep up to date by listening to ABC Local Radio or look at the TFS website,” they said.
“Well prepared homes are defendable in these conditions. If you are not prepared for a bushfire, think about leaving for a safe place if it gets more dangerous. If your family has made a bushfire survival plan, check it now.”
People with medical conditions are advised to have a personal plan for avoiding smoke from the burn, with more information available from the Department of Health and Human Services website.
TFS is asking people travelling in the area to exercise caution if driving in the smoke.
“Turn on your headlights and drive slowly,” they said.
