The seven finalists announced on Monday all reached the pinnacle of their sports in a stunning year for Tasmania.
The Commonwealth Games were the most successful in the history of Tasmanian sport with the state providing 15 athletes who returned with 16 medals.
Swimmer Ariarne Titmus, bowler Rebecca Van Asch and track cyclist Amy Cure were all multiple gold medallists on the Gold Coast.
Titmus, of Launceston, who turned 18 last month, won the 400 and 800-metre freestyles, came second in the 200m and anchored the 4x200m relay team to her third gold medal.
Van Asch, 30, of Invermay, helped Australian teams win the women’s triples and fours while Cure, 25, of West Pine, was a member of the women's team pursuit triumph before adding the scratch race title.
Launceston triathlete Jake Birtwhistle, 23, anchored Australia to a team gold two days after claiming individual silver while Hobartians Eddie Ockenden, 31, and Jeremy Edwards, 26, helped the Kookaburras maintain their record of having won every Commonwealth hockey title.
Huon rower Sarah Hawe, 31, added a world championship silver medal in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to the gold she won a year earlier in Sarasota, USA, both in the coxless four, and was also part of an Australian crew that set a course record at the prestigious Henley Regatta.
The athlete of the year will be announced at a special cocktail function at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday, November 28.
The 2018 inductees into the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame will also be recognised at the event.
