Tasmania Police Commander Brett Smith said the well-known Northern District police Inspector had shown “encouraging signs” suffering burns to 25-30 per cent of his body in the crash.
The plane caught fire in mid-air and Inspector Hopkins managed to land the aircraft and contact emergency services following the incident.
“I’m pleased to report Darren has shown positive signs of improvement overnight,” Commander Smith said.
“His medical team is focused on his ongoing recovery, which is expected to take some time.
“Our thoughts are with Darren, his family and loved ones, and of course those people who work alongside him at this difficult time.
“We are continuing to be in close contact with and provide strong support to Darren’s family and loved ones. We’re also planning for his longer term recovery.”
Tasmania Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward and assist with their investigation, held in consultation with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
“Anyone with information who may have seen the aircraft near Hagley just before the crash should call Launceston Police on 131444,” Inspector Smith said.
