Crusty’s Bakery, which has locations in Ulverstone and Wivenhoe, won champion cake of the show, and Bakers Delight Mowbray won the coveted Perpetual Trophy.
Cottage Bakery are no stranger to awards, but co-owner Vanessa Lodge said that every recognition was a testament to their staff.
“We’re very excited for our young staff who work really hard,” she said.
“We’ve got three apprentices and they work tirelessly.”
She said that the secret to their success was not so mysterious: high-quality produce sourced from the region, and staff who care about what they do.
“We use local ingredients, and the boys make sure they put extra effort into trying to make a great product, and they do that every day.
“A lot of love and effort is put into the bread. We have our loyal customers who buy our bread every day so we try and make it consistent.”
The awards took place at TasTAFE’s Paterson Street campus, with judges flying in from across the country to evaluate the pies, cakes, and loaves of bread.
Head judge Stewart Latter said that judging the Tasmanian stage of the Baking Industry Association Awards was always a highlight for him.
“I love Tassie shows, Tassie shows would be up there as one of my favourite states to compete because their products are usually really good, and there’s good trade skills,” he said.
The fourth-generation baker and former president of the Baking Industry Association travelled to Launceston from the Hunter Valley for the event.
“It’s really important to me that the people that enter get the feedback that they’re looking for,” he said.
