The public piece of art work aims to provide a sense of pride into the community.
Starting Point Neighbourhood House president Sharon Leonard said about nine community groups helped make the sign come alive.
“It all came about when the council came over to the school to talk about Ravenswood and they asked what we wanted and I said ‘we need a sign’. The rest of the people did the work,” Ms Leonard said.
“Once [the community] make something and they see what they’ve done they become very proud. It’ll be there forever. It’s about community ownership. They’ll be able to come down and say ‘we did this little bit’.”
City of Launceston council mayor Albert van Zetten commended Ms Leonard for her work.
“There is no doubt Sharon is one of the most dedicated volunteers in her community and her passion is unquestionable,” he said.
Each letter was designed by a different community group, with a design that had meaning for the particular group. Each group was given four weeks to design their letters, with local artist and University of Tasmania social work student Fakington Wilde then working with the printers to fine tune the designs. They were printed onto aluminium by JT Designs.
The signs were part of the council’s ABCDE Learning Site program.
