Anthony Colin Finnegan, 36, was found guilty of murdering Peter Fitzgerald, 56, at Mr Fitzgerald’s Summerhill unit on December 1, 2016.
In the Supreme Court in Hobart on Thursday, Justice Helen Wood was told that the Legal Aid Commission was investigating the merits of the appeal.
She adjourned the matter for further hearing on November 6.
Finnegan appeared via video link from Risdon Prison.
Last month told the court he wanted to appeal his conviction, but was waiting to get an appointment with the Legal Aid Commission.
After a trial lasting more than two weeks, a jury took just two hours to find him guilty of murder.
Finnegan was sentenced to 21 years’ jail for killing Mr Fitzgerald.
