Three signs belonging to Wendy McLennan have been removed: one at Pioneer, one at Derby, and one on the corner of Bridport Road and Listers Lane.
One sign belonging to Edwina Powell on her property on the Tasman Highway has been covered in white spray paint.
Ms McLennan has taken the matter to the police, who are investigating.
She said the vandalism appeared to be targeted.
“Up at Derby my sign was taken, but there was others on the same fence and they weren’t touched,” she said.
Ms Powell said the defacement was a serious matter.
“It’s unacceptable to interfere with the opportunity to make a statement,” she said. “It’s a democratic right to put a sign up if you’re following the rules.
“I’ve had to arrange for my son to come up and help me replace the sign. That’s time I could have spent talking to people.”
Incumbent mayor Greg Howard said his signs had been defaced in previous campaigns.
“I’ve learned from the past and placed them well inside property boundaries, behind electric fences and that sort of thing,” he said.
