A Launceston driver was charged and detained by Tasmania Police over an alleged high-level drink driving incident on Saturday.

At 12.25pm, a Road and Public Order Services unit allegedly observed a car emitting a large amount of smoke on Margaret Street, Launceston.
Police said the amount of smoke was so great the roadside could barely be seen.
Police intercepted the car on Maitland Street, Launceston, where the driver allegedly gave a positive breath test.

A subsequent breath test at the Launceston Police Station resulted in an alleged reading of 0.305, which was more than six times over the legal limit.
Police said at the time the car was intercepted, the driver did not have a valid licence and was issued an Excessive Drink Driving notice 15 days prior.
This was due to another alleged high-level drink driving incident.
