Getting older doesn’t mean giving up, but it can mean giving back. This is what around 400 Tasmanian’s do each year when they volunteer as drivers with Community Transport Services Tasmania - CTST.
CTST is a statewide not-for-profit organisation funded by the State and Federal governments to enable independence and social inclusion for the over 65s and for people with a disability.
It provides door to door transport services for Tasmanians over 65 who are deemed isolated or at risk of being isolated and for those who are disadvantaged and unable to access transport.
Drivers take clients from their homes to non-emergency medical appointments, hair appointments or on a group outing.
Vehicles are replaced every 5-7 years, serviced regularly and volunteers are supported with a working with vulnerable people card and are subject to a police check.
CTST has a range of vehicles designed to assist clients in getting where they need to be.
Cars range from sedans for taking clients to more personal appointments to commuters that have been specially fitted-out to cater for those who perhaps can’t move as well as they’d like.
“The average age of our volunteers is 66, many of whom have retired or semi-retired and are looking to give back to the community,” CTST CEO Lyndon Stevenson said.
“In fact, in a recent survey 98% of our volunteers highlighted that the reason they volunteer is because they want to give back and help people within their community and we are so grateful for the support they provide to our clients.”
The impact that an organisation such as CTST has on our community is enormous.
Last year, around 6000 eligible Tasmanians from Smithton to Bruny Island were able to remain living independently with the support of CTST.
As our population ages; it is more important than ever for our health and well being that we remain active both physically and socially.
