A motion from West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl that council “recognize the traffic related issues on the West Tamar Highway particularly as it impacts student safety between Cormiston Road and Cleghorn Avenue” has been tabled for the meeting on Tuesday, October 16.
It comes after the West Tamar Highway Safety Committee received a letter addressed to the RACT from the principals of Riverside High, Riverside Primary, St Anthony’s and Launceston Christian Schools.
The main areas of concern for the schools – as outlined in the letter – are the congestion outside Riverside High School during peak times, Riverside Primary School traffic and the congestion of vehicles trying to get back to Cleghorn Road, and the timing of pedestrian lights at the Windsor Drive/Ecclestone Road/West Tamar Highway intersection.
The correspondence goes on to request the RACT assist in advocating for a traffic study of the West Tamar Highway at Riverside.
In her motion to council, Cr Holmdahl recommends that council call on the Department of State Growth to “ensure that any current or future traffic investigation include the West Tamar Highway between Cormiston Road and Cleghorn Avenue”.
Cr Holmdahl, who is also chairwoman of the West Tamar Highway Safety Committee, said the committee “believe that the issues raised in the school’s correspondence are worthy of further investigation as a means to consider how to improve student safety”.
The October meeting will be held at Beaconsfield from 1.30pm on Tuesday, October 16.
