The George & Eileen Johnson Puppy Championship final was billed as a match-race between two rising stars and it didn’t disappoint.
After beginning fairly, Peco Can pushed through between runners to find the lead and control the race.
However Buckle Up Axon, who settled just off the pace, finished strongly to get within ¾ of a length on the line.
Trainer Robin Grubb expects the battle to be the first of many.
“The second dog is very good and I expect these two are going to clash a fair bit,” Grubb said.
Peco Can, who has now won 11 of her 13 starts, will contest The Laurels in Hobart next week before Grubb sets his sights on his ultimate goal.
“It will then be time to start working towards the Hobart Thousand (in December),” the trainer said.
Landlord was another impressive winner at the meeting, running a very smart 25.20 as he accounted for talented rival Stop Line.
