As CSIRO National Collections and Marine Infrastructure director, Ms Moate oversees research activities for the ocean.
Winning the award in 2017 provided Ms Moate with a platform to speak on issues she was passionate about.
“It made me think seriously about where I thought I could most make a difference,” she said.
“I was asked to speak at one of Hobart’s top boys schools, and I used the opportunity to not only encourage these young men to pursue their dreams, but to also think about the role they play in supporting young women and providing a safe environment for both genders to achieve their goals,” Ms Moate said.
Young women need to see female role models in a variety of career options, and this awards program offers such an opportunity.
“The awards bring women into the spotlight and encourage them to tell their story,” Ms Moate said.
“In doing so they provide inspiration to young girls to consider careers they didn’t otherwise contemplate and later on to speak up, step up and take on roles they didn’t feel empowered to undertake.”
Nominations are now open for the 2019 Telstra Business Women’s Awards.
Telstra Business Women’s Awards Ambassador and Chief Operations officer Robyn Denholm said the program was now in its 24th year.
“We shine a light on those who, by undoing traditional approaches to business, are setting examples to inspire others,” Ms Denholm said.
“Anyone can nominate a business woman, and if you are one yourself, we encourage you to enter the program, stand in the spotlight and be recognised for your achievements.”
The 2019 program has five categories: Small Business, Medium & Large Business, Public Sector & Academia, For Purpose & Social Enterprise, and Emerging Leader.
Nominations are open until November 8.
