A renowned Launceston restaurant has been awarded a hat in Australia’s 2019 Good Food Guide.
Stillwater Restaurant took out one of seven hats awarded to Tasmanian restaurants in the prestigious guide.
The guide consists of independent, anonymous reviews written by a panel of restaurant critics, and recognises the best Australian restaurants with “hats”, symbolic of a chef’s toque.
To win a spot in the guide, restaurants must score at least 15 out of 20, or 14 in New South Wales and Victoria.
More than 500 restaurants throughout the country were reviewed, with 264 receiving a hat status.
Stillwater Restaurant co-owners Bianca Welsh and Kim Seagram were excited about the recognition.
“This was a fabulous win for Stillwater or in fact any restaurant entering its 19th year of operation and speaks volumes about how the focus on premium local produce and wine and a dynamic team who grow hospitality talent locally stands the test of time,” Ms Seagram said.
“This win, like any other, gives the Stillwater team a welcome pat on the back for all the hard work.
“It also reinforces we are taking the business in the right direction, but more importantly our customers are telling us directly and through many review sites they are loving the Stillwater experience and forward bookings are strong.”
Ms Welsh said she was very proud of the team’s work.
“It’s not just one person, it’s the whole team that works to keep the calibre of the restaurant at this level,” she said.
“We’re just really stoked.”
Guide editor Myffy Rigby said the guide remains Australia’s restaurant bible.
“The second annual national Good Food Guide is a reflection of the thousands of voices that make Australia one of the most diverse and delicious places to eat in the world,” she said.
“The guide is a celebration of the industry as a whole. Every one of the restaurants featured is a summation of all those moving parts.
“We recognise the hard work of all those Australian restaurants and everything they do to enrich the scene.”
Six other Tasmanian restaurants were awarded hat status.
In the state’s south, Franklin and The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery received two hats, and Dier Makr, Templo, Fico, and The Source received one hat.
