Cr Vickers said he hoped to discuss Battery of the Nation with the new PM when Mr Morrison and Treasurer Jogh Frydenberg visited the West Coast.

“I think that would be a sensible thing to do if I get the opportunity,” Cr Vickers said.

“The pumped hydro scenario backed by wind and solar is a great idea.”

The West Coast is one of the key potential winners from Battery of the Nation.

The project, which would vastly increase Tasmania’s energy output and exports while increasing energy security and making wind power more reliable, was a passion of deposed prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Labor expressed doubts about the chances of Battery of the Nation proceeding after Mr Morrison confirmed Mr Turnbull’s National Energy Guarantee policy had been abandoned.

However, various federal Liberal MPs  stressed that Battery of the Nation remained a priority.

According to state Energy Minister Guy Barnett: “Our plans for further interconnection across Bass Strait, new pumped hydro schemes, significant upgrades to existing hydro facilities and wind are also transformative opportunities for Tasmania that represent thousands of potential jobs.”

Mr Morrison will visit Queenstown on Friday in the lead-up to speaking at the Liberal Party’s state council in Hobart on Saturday.

During his West Coast visit, the government is expected to reaffirm it would provide $700,000 to improve mobile phone coverage on the West Coast.

“The $700,000 is nearly as good a game-changer as the NBN,” Cr Vickers said.

“We had no way of finding $700,000.”

He said the work would include upgrading communications infrastructure at Round Hill, near Burnie, and providing smaller towers to improve coverage to areas including Granville Harbour.

In July, the government said the plan would provide  towns including Rosebery, Queenstown, Savage River, Strahan, Zeehan, Tullah and Waratah with faster mobile services.

Cr Vickers said he had been told the government was working with Telstra to “get the job done”.
