The Tasmanian Aboriginal Land Council will ask for talks with the state and federal governments about taking ownership of the land, stretching from north of Granville Harbour on the West Coast to Marrawah.
“This area is so precious with its hut depressions, middens, rock carvings and village sites that it is the perfect place for Tasmanian Aborigines to reconnect with our past,” Tasmanian Aboriginal Land Council chairman Michael Mansell said.
“Our people were grateful to the federal government for giving the narrow strip of land federal protection as part of the national estate in February, 2013, and it is now time to take the next step and hand the lands back to the original owners.”
