And the panel of judges – Rowing Tasmania executive officer Rob Prescott, IGA's Travis Allen and netball administrator Alison Filgate – described the shortlist of finalists as the “highest quality in a number of years”.
“Some very difficult decisions were made on Tuesday because of the quality of the entrants, and it was pleasing to see there were many who have competed at a state, national or international level,” Prescott said.
“The judges deliberated long and hard in deciding on some very worthwhile recipients.”
Prescott, who is along-time The Examiner-IGA Junior Sports Awards judge, said it was pleasing to see so many talented young people excelling in a variety of different sports.
“I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing the quality of athletes that we have in this state,” he said.
“There are some really good kids out there that want to make a name for themselves in their chosen sport and are putting in the time and hardwork to make the most of it.
“We are also seeing the magnificent support their respective clubs, schools, state bodies, parents and volunteers are putting into helping them progress.”
Winners of 2018’s seven categories will be announced during a gala dinner at Country Club Tasmania on Wednesday, October 31, from 6pm.
Invites will be sent to all finalists this week with former AFL player and Launceston Football Club coach Sam Lonergan to shed some light on his career to date – the highs and lows, what it takes to be a professional athlete and how to stay there.
Anyone is welcome to attend with tickets available from The Examiner office in Cimitiere Street, Launceston.
