The new multipurpose recreation field – jointly owned and operated by West Tamar Council and Launceston Christian School – includes boundary fencing, AFL and soccer goal posts, an astro-turf cricket wicket, and full lighting.
Under a sharing scheme the oval will be used by LCS during school hours, with council taking community bookings during other times.
LCS principal Adrian Bosker spoke of the huge amount of work, overseen by the council, that had gone into the space.
“Sometimes you’ve got to wait for good things,” he said, referring to the process of sowing the grass from seed.
“They’ve done a great job.”
The project was awarded $1 million of funding under a Department of Infrastructure and Development grant scheme in December 2016.
Opened in May 2018, the nearby Riverside Olympic Football Centre will complement the field with change rooms, public amenities, and parking for users outside of school hours.
