Ms McLennan is the community liason officer for the Launceston North-East Railway group, which aims to establish a heritage train service between Launceston and the North-East, in opposition to a plan to remove the tracks and replace them with a cycling and walking trail.
However, Ms McLennan said she is not a one-issue candidate.
She identified her main priorities as creating an independent Destination Marketing Plan for Dorset, installing restrooms in high-use areas such as Victoria Street in Scottsdale, preserving the Bridport foreshore, developing a climate change plan for council, and focusing on mental health and families.
She said she wanted to bring a culture of strong community consultation to council.
“The major thing is community consultation, that’s what’s been lacking,” she said.
“There’s been a lot of top-heavy decisions, and I want to see more forums, focus groups, and consultations, because that’s the only way you’re going to get anywhere.
“I’m prepared to listen and involve the community in decision making, and I believe everyone should have a say in what effects them.
“I think we need to rebuild trust and confidence within Dorset Council, and I think that’s something that is missing at the moment.”
She said she wanted more strategic planning to be done around the North-East’s tourism future.
“The railway highlights the need for a proper Destination Marketing Plan to be done, so that we can achieve a sustainable and innovative tourism product, that has community support and preserves the natural environment, so that we can establish high-quality visitor experiences,” she said.
Ms McLennan worked for the Federal government in environmental management for 26 years. She has worked at the North Eastern Soldiers Memorial Hospital, is on the management board of aged care facility the Aminya Centre, owned and ran the Flying Teapot cafe and beef farm, is the finance officer for CWA Tasmania, established the Bridport branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A), was a member of the North-East Tourism Association for 12 years, and is a member of the Bridport Lions Club and of North-East Residents and Farmers.
Other announced mayoral candidates are current mayor Greg Howard and Edwina Powell, with full listings to be released today.
Ballots for the local government elections will be posted in October.
